Substitutions and Variations
Don’t have lime? You can substitute lemon juice! You need some kind of citrusy acid for this recipe to work.
Add a teaspoon of fresh herbs, like cilantro or chives, to add extra flavor to your simple avocado aioli.
Use a sugar-free mayo to make this recipe Whole30 compatible. You can even use some homemade avocado mayo for extra clean ingredients.
How to Make Avocado Aioli
Follow these step by step instructions to make perfect avocado garlic aioli of your dreams:
Juice the lime and then peel the garlic cloves. Then halve the avocados and remove the pits. Scoop out the avocado flesh with a spoon and transfer it to a blender cup with all the other ingredients.
Use an immersion blender, or a small blender, to blend the aioli until smooth, starting at a low speed. Season the to taste with salt and pepper.
If necessary, add a teaspoon at a time of lime juice or oil to thin it, until it reaches a creamy, spreadable consistency. Serve immediately or store for later!
How to Store Avocado Aioli
Transfer leftovers of this creamy spread to an airtight container and store in the fridge for 3-4 days. However, for best taste and appearance, eat it as soon as possible, preferably immediately. I don’t recommend freezing avocado aioli because it will separate when defrosted, giving it an odd and unappetizing consistency.
How to Use Avocado Aioli
There are dozens and dozens of ways to use this amazing condiment! My favorite is to use it as a dipping sauce for sweet potato fries, but it’s great with parsnip fries, quesadillas, carrot sticks, or onion rings too.
You can also spread it on burger buns and elevate your homemade hamburgers, or use it inside wraps, or on toasted bread.
Use in place of mayonnaise in your chicken salad or tuna salad recipes. You can even drizzle it on top of roasted vegetables, grilled salmon, or chicken.
I’ve even made a sauce to serve with noodles by thinning the consistency of the aioli when mixing it with a little hot pasta water. There are seriously so many uses!
Tips for Success
Check out these few simple tips to ensure this fun twist on traditional aioli works out great:
- If you don’t have an immersion blender, use a mini food processor or blender to blend the aioli. Pulse to break down the ingredients, then set it to a low speed until it’s creamy and smooth. You may have to scrape the sides down a few times.
- Season aioli to taste! Taste the aioli as you go and adjust the seasonings accordingly. You can add more salt, garlic, or lime juice to adjust it to your taste preferences.
- Use ripe avocados for the creamiest aioli. When you gently squeeze the avocado in the palm of your hand, ripe avocados will yield slightly to gentle pressure, but aren’t be overly soft or mushy. Avoid avocados that feel very firm or hard.
FAQ
Yes, you can make avocado aioli without a food processor or blender! It takes a bit more effort, but you can still achieve a creamy consistency. First, mince the garlic and then mash the avocado with a fork until it’s as smooth as possible. Mix all the ingredients together as best you can and serve.
Avocado will turn brown as it oxidizes when exposed to air, which makes it less appetizing in appearance but doesn’t make it unsafe to eat. And while we can’t totally prevent it from happening, we can minimize the browning! Drizzle a little extra lime juice over the entire top of the aioli and don’t stir it. Additionally, placing plastic wrap directly on the surface of the aioli before refrigerating can create a barrier and reduce browning. Just before serving, stir the entire container with a spoon.
If you use a Whole30 compatible mayonnaise (typically made with avocado or olive oil), then this recipe is Whole30 compatible.
