You might be here because you’re looking for a substitute for store-bought Greek seasoning… but once you try homemade spice blends, you may never go back!
Use it to add authentic Greek flavor to pretty much anything, from chicken thighs to white fish to your favorite vegetables. It’s great way to add flavor with a rub, in marinades or even in salad dressing.

Ingredients
If you’ve ever wondered what’s IN Greek seasoning that makes it taste so good, this is all you need to know. Here’s what you need to make your own:
- Dried Greek oregano
- Dried dill
- Dried basil
- Garlic powder
- Ground thyme
- Salt
- Pepper
- Dried lemon peel, optional (but so worth it!)
Substitutions & variations
Dried lemon peel adds a touch of bright citrus flavor and to the blend without adding any bitterness, which compliments the herbs and immediately ups the excitement level in your dishes. It’s totally optional, though, so feel free to omit it! You can also just add a splash of fresh lemon juice to your dishes, too.
If you don’t have oregano, you can substitute Marjoram, because the flavor is very similar. Marjoram is slightly milder than oregano, so you’ll want to add tiny bit extra.
You can also experiment with adding other spices like onion powder or black pepper.
Instructions
Making homemade seasoning blends is so easy! The hardest part is measuring… but Simply add all your ingredients to a small dish or jar, and use a spoon to mix it well and fully combine all the ingredients.
If you like a finer consistency, quickly pulse all the ingredients together in a blender or food processor or use a mortar and pestle to gently combine and break down the spice blend.
How to Store Homemade Seasonings
Whether you make this Greek seasoning or another spice blend like my air fryer dry rub, the storage is pretty much the same!
Simply transfer your homemade seasoning blend to a glass jar or another airtight container. Cover tightly and store at room temperature in a cool, dry place that’s out of direct sunlight.
For the best flavor, use it within a year. (A good rule of thumb for any herb or spice on your rack — they can go rancid so always plan a date to check them!)
