How to Make Deviled Eggs

Follow these step-by-step instructions to make this delicious and healthy snack:

Hands peeling hard boiled brown eggs.
  1. Hard boil the eggs. Place eggs into a medium pot and add just enough water to cover them. Set the pot over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes, then cover the pot and remove from heat. Let the eggs sit, covered, for 15 minutes.
  2. While the eggs are cooking, prepare an ice bath. After 15 minutes, carefully remove each egg and place it in the bowl of ice water for 5 minutes to stop the cooking process.
  3. Peel and slice each egg in half.
  4. Carefully remove the yolks. Mash the yolks in a bowl until crumbly. Then add mayo, mustard, salt and pepper and stir until it creates a creamy egg yolk mixture.
  5. Spoon the mixture into the egg white halves or add to a piping bag and pipe it in. Sprinkle with a bit of paprika and top with your favorite garnishes if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Tips for Success

For the best results, check out my helpful tips for making the deviled eggs:

  • Avoid over cooking the eggs. This dries out the egg yolks, giving them a mealy consistency. This is why the ice bath is so important too! It stops the cooking process, helping to keep the egg yolks the perfect texture.
  • For the best flavor, chill the deviled eggs for about 30 minutes before serving.
  • Season the filling mixture well. Taste it before adding to the egg whites and add more salt and pepper as needed.

How to Store Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs will last for about two days when stored in the refrigerator. Store them in a single layer in an airtight container.

This recipe is not freezer-friendly.

Deviled eggs should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Toppings and Recipe Variations

There are so many yummy things that you can mix into deviled eggs or add as a topping. I love my everything bagel deviled eggs, and that’s just one example of how easy it is to make the filling in different flavors.

  • Add crumbled crispy bacon. For an extra salty snack, cook bacon and then crumble it up to mix in or add as a topping
  • Use some fresh herbs. Things like green onions and fresh chives add lovely flavor as a topping.
  • Include dill pickle relish into the egg yolk mixture.
  • Make them spicy. You can make your deviled eggs spicy by using sriracha mayo instead of regular.
  • Add avocado, for a dose of healthy fats to this yummy snack. Just mash the ripe avocado and mix it into the yolks.

Serving Suggestions

While these are a wonderful appetizer all on their own, you can serve them alongside some tasty dishes. Instead of a hard boiled egg, serve a deviled egg in your chicken bacon caesar salad. You could even make a really quick breakfast with some keto waffles and a few deviled eggs.

I love to have deviled eggs at cook outs with homemade hamburgers too! They’d also be a really quick side dish to whip up with Greek yogurt chicken or any other easy dinner recipe.

Absolutely! You can make them up to one day in advance. Just store in the coldest part of the fridge in an airtight container until you are ready to serve.

How do you boil eggs so that they are easy to peel?

The key is to bring the water to boil with the eggs in the pot. Then only let them boil for about 3 minutes and quickly transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. This will make the peel much easier to remove.
