Happy Kitchen Secrets

Here are my mom-tested cooking tips for hard boiling eggs in the Instant Pot! I’ve made them countless times, so I’ll save you from a failed attempt.

  1. It is super important to use the trivet! The eggs should not touch the bottom or sides of the Instant Pot because it can cause them to burst while cooking. Then you’ll end up with an eggy mess on your hands.
  2. Don’t skip the ice bath. It truly is the key to make easy peel eggs. Plus, if you skip it, the eggs will take far too long to cool before you can peel them.
  3. Use the freshest eggs you can find. The older ones are much harder to peel.
  4. Try to use eggs that are the same size. Eggs can sometimes be varying sizes, especially if they are farm fresh. So just be sure to grab eggs that are around the same size.

Ingredient Notes

Make sure you’ve got some fresh eggs to cook, because they are much easier to peel after being hard boiled. You can use brown eggs or white eggs, whichever you prefer.

How to Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

This is just a summary of the steps. See the recipe card for full instructions! ⬇️

  1. Place the metal trivet into the inner pot of the Instant Pot and then pour one cup of water into the pot. This won’t completely cover the trivet, which is fine – the eggs shouldn’t be sitting in the water.

  1. Arrange the eggs on the trivet. You can stack them on top of each other if needed, but I have not tested this recipe with more than 10 eggs at a time.

  1. Once the eggs are placed into the Instant Pot, place the lid on top and set the valve in the sealing position. Select the “manual” or “pressure cook” setting and set the cooking time to 5 minutes on high pressure.

  1. While the cooking cycle is going, prepare an ice water bath in a large bowl.
  2. When the pressure cooking cycle is complete, flip the valve to the venting position for a quick pressure release.
  3. Open the lid and use tongs to carefully transfer each hard boiled egg into the ice bath. This helps stop the cooking process.

Storing

You can store eggs with or without their shells on. If you keep the shells on, you can just place them back into a clean egg carton.

If you plan to store peeled eggs, make sure that they are completely dry. Then place into an airtight container or plastic bag and store for 3-4 days.

FAQs

Does it matter how many eggs I put in the Instant Pot?

Not necessarily, but I recommend around 10-12. You can technically stack as many eggs as you want and still pressure cook them for the exact same length of time. However, the more eggs you stack the more risk you have of them bumping into the sides or falling off of the trivet which could cause them to bust while cooking. I simply just recommend cooking no more than a dozen at a time for best results.

How long do hard boiled eggs last?

When left in their shell, fresh hard boiled eggs will last for about a week. Peeled eggs don’t last as long, but can be stored in the fridge for a few days.

Can you freeze hard boiled eggs?

It is not recommended to freeze hard boiled eggs. They will not thaw well and likely would not have a good texture or taste and could spoil in the process. The egg whites will get tough and essentially be inedible.
