Health Benefits of Kiwi

Did you know kiwi is a superfood? That’s right, these little green friends are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants important to health and immunity.

  • Kiwis contain more vitamin C than oranges!
  • Kiwis are a significant source of vitamin E and vitamin K
  • They’re also a great source of folate and manganese. Win!

Ingredients

To make this fresh kiwi juice, you will need:

  • Kiwis: Choose kiwifruit that are soft enough to give a bit when you squeeze it, but not mushy. Avoid any extra firm kiwis because they’re underripe.
  • Spinach: Earthy spinach helps to mellow out the tart flavor of kiwifruit. You can omit them if you’d like, but I’d recommend substituting another kind of greens, like kale, to help balance the flavors.
  • Oranges: Ditto with the oranges. Use lemon or lime juice instead to balance the sweetness. You could also throw in store-bought orange juice if you want.

You can make this already delicious drink recipe even more flavorful if you want! Add these optional ingredients for extra nutrients and flavor:

  • 2 cups strawberries (strawberry kiwi juice is one of my faves!)
  • 2 diced apples
  • 1 cup kale
  • 2 diced mangos
  • 1-2 peeled lemons
  • 1-inch fresh ginger
  • 2 cups diced pineapple.

Preparing Fruit for the Juicer

Before you start, wash the kiwis, oranges, and spinach well. Peel and quarter the oranges. Cut the kiwis in half.

👉 Cut the pieces of fruit small enough to fit through your juicer chute. If you’re using a blender, cut them into similar-size chunks to make it easier on the machine.
👉 You do not need to peel the kiwi unless you prefer to! Kiwi skins contain vitamins C and E, folate, and antioxidants, and they can easily be processed in a blender or juicer.

How to Juice Kiwi

Now that you’ve prepared your produce, you’re ready to make your own kiwi juice. So, let’s go! It’s just a few easy steps.

In the juicer

Turn on the juicer and add all the ingredients one at a time. Juice the kiwi, oranges and spinach according to the user instructions of your juicer. Add any optional ingredients as well. Once all the juice is extracted and separated from the pulp, turn off the juicer.

In the blender

For this method, use a regular blender not an immersion blender.

Add the fruit to a blender with 1 cup of water, apple juice, or coconut water. Blend it on high speed until it’s totally smooth. You can drink it as-is, and it will have the consistency of a smoothie. For a juicier consistency, pour and press the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth. This separates the juice from the pulp.

How to store it

Serve your kiwifruit juice immediately. Don’t leave it at room temperature for longer than 2 hours, per USDA.

Or you can cover it and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Be sure to use a food-safe, airtight container such as a mason jar.

Also, fresh juice will separate as it sits, so stir the juice before drinking.

You can also freeze leftover homemade juice! Freeze in soup cubes, or silicone trays, then remove the frozen cubes and transfer them to an airtight, freezer-safe container or bag and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator. You can drink the juice or you can add the cubes to smoothies for an instant flavor infusion!

Tips & tricks

Here are some expert tips for making this recipe:

  • Store homemade juice covered in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Adjust this recipe to taste. Once you taste it, feel free to add more oranges, spinach, or any other ingredient you enjoy. If the tart kiwi taste is too strong, you can dilute the juice by juicing another orange or by adding a little water.
  • This recipe yields about 24 ounces (3 cups) of juice, but the exact amount will depend on the ingredients used and the efficiency of your juicer.
  • One 4 ounce serving of juice is considered equal to one half cup serving of fruit.
