Red Pepper Hummus Recipe

I am a big fan of Mediterranean cuisine, especially healthy dishes like Lamb Meatballs and Mediterranean salmon. But my favorite are the appetizers and snacks, especially hummus!

There are so many great ways to enjoy it! From spicy sriracha hummus on a lettuce wrap to grilled chicken salad with hummus.

Regardless of the recipe, it starts with a base of chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans). In this case, they’re blended with sweet and smoky roasted red peppers. The color is absolutely gorgeous!

Grab some pita bread or tortilla chips and dig into the goodness of this healthy, high protein dip!

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • chickpeas / garbanzo beans: Like many other legumes, you can buy these in cans, so they’re ready to use. If you would rather cook them yourself, get a bag of dried chickpeas.
  • roasted red peppers: Roasting peppers isn’t difficult, and some people say that it’s a fun task. I like to save time, so I use jarred roasted red peppers. You can find them in the condiments aisle of the grocery store.
  • olive oil: To create a creamy and smooth emulsion, you need to use a liquid cooking oil. Any neutral flavor will work well.
  • tahini: For an authentic hummus flavor, it’s important to include tahini. It’s just sesame seed paste, and it has a wonderful nutty flavor. If you need a substitute for tahini, you can use sunflower butter or even almond butter, but the flavor of your hummus will be quite a bit different.
  • fresh lemon juice: You can buy fresh lemons all year long, and actually, they’re more budget friendly than buying bottled lemon juice. Substitute with lime juice if you need or want to.
  • seasonings: A couple of cloves of fresh garlic add a punch of Mediterranean flavor. You’ll also need sea salt, black pepper, and a bit of ground cumin. If you need a substitute, coriander is a great one.

How to Make Red Pepper Hummus

I think you'll love how easy this hummus recipe is to make! Just blend the ingredients together until they’re smooth and creamy. If you use canned garbanzo beans and jarred roasted red peppers, the entire process only takes about 15 minutes.

Tips for Success

Making hummus isn’t difficult at all! Just follow these tips for the best results:

  • Use fresh ingredients. The way to get the perfect flavor is to use fresh squeezed lemon juice and fresh cloves of garlic.
  • Pat the peppers dry. If you use jarred peppers, it's best to dry them off a bit. This will prevent your hummus from being watery.
  • For a smoother consistency, spend a few minutes peeling the skins off of the chickpeas.
  • Chill for the best flavor. You can eat the hummus dip immediately, but I think it tastes the best when it’s cold. l let it sit in the fridge for about an hour or two before digging in.
