Happy Kitchen Secrets
Here are my important mom-tested cooking tips for making this recipe! I’ve made this countless times to save you from a failed attempt.
- For consistent results, cut each sweet potato into cubes that are as similar in size as possible. Because of their oblong shape, they won’t be exactly the same, and this is okay.
- Don’t overload the basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook this dish in batches.
- Before removing the sweet potatoes from the air fryer, test for doneness. Perfectly cooked sweet potato cubes should be golden and crispy on the outside, and soft inside.

Ingredients
You only need four ingredients to make this recipe a success. Who else loves recipes that don’t require a long laundry list of ingredients? Here is all you need:

- sweet potatoes: You’ll be making air fryer sweet potato cubes, so when you shop for the taters, choose the ones that will be easiest to cut.
- olive oil or avocado oil: These oils perform the best in the air fryer. They can withstand the high heat without burning.
- salt & pepper: These make a great, simple seasoning, but you can feel free to use an all-purpose seasoning, a sprinkle of cinnamon, herb blends or paprika.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes
While this recipe is pretty straight-forward, I want to walk you through the steps to guarantee success! Here is everything that you’ll need to do:
- While your air fryer preheats, scrub the sweet potatoes to remove any dirt, then cut them into cubes. Season them in a large bowl with olive oil, salt and pepper.

- Arrange the seasoned potatoes in the air fryer basket. Spread them out into a single layer so that they cook evenly. .
- Air fry the the sweet potatoes for 15-20 minutes, giving the basket a little shake halfway through, to toss the potatoes.
Once done, the potatoes should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Serving and Storing
Place leftover sweet potatoes into an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Let them thaw before reheating.
Reheat leftovers with a small amount of oil in the air fryer, a 350°F. oven, or in a skillet on the stovetop. You can microwave leftovers if you prefer, but the outsides of the potatoes will not remain crisp.
I like to serve the sweet potato cubes with easy main dishes like Instant Pot pork chops, crockpot chicken thighs, and grilled chicken bbq drumsticks. They’re a much healthier option compared to French fries and just as tasty.
Make it kid friendly: My kids love to dip veggies into any kind of sauce. Make them some sugar free BBQ sauce, warm queso, or healthy ranch dressing.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Recipe FAQ
While some people prefer to soak their potatoes in cold water before putting them in the air fryer, it isn't necessary. However, soaking removes excess starch, which makes the flesh softer. So, if this is important to you, then feel free to soak and dry them before you add seasoning.
Yams and sweet potatoes may seem similar but are, in fact, entirely different. Sweet potatoes have a sweeter flavor and their cooked flesh is very soft. Yams are starchier, so even after cooking, they have a firmer bite.
Not at all. Sweet potato slices or wedges will work with this recipe. However, when you cut them, make sure the sizes are similar so that they all finish cooking at the same time.
