Easy Air Fryer Hot Dog Recipe

Do you ever want to cook hot dogs but don’t have the time and energy to fire up the grill? If so, you have to try this recipe. These are the best air fryer hot dogs, with a juicy interior and a perfectly crisp, air fried exterior.

This is a weeknight and lunchtime favorite at our house. All you need are some toasted buns, the toppings of your choice, and you have a quick and easy meal!

Why I Love Air Fryer Hot Dogs

  1. The air fryer creates the best texture. Some methods for cooking hot dogs, like boiling or microwaving, produce a soft texture throughout. Hot dogs from the air fryer are tender on the inside with that perfect crisp and snap on the outside.
  2. They’re kid-approved. This recipe is the perfect break from complicated dinner recipes. It’s a meal the whole family is guaranteed to love!
  3. It’s adaptable. You can serve these hot dogs with an endless variety of flavorful condiments and side dishes.

Ingredients

  • Hot Dogs: You can make as few or as many as you’d like! Our favorite hot dogs are all-beef hot dogs.
  • Hot Dog Buns: Feel free to use your favorite variety. We like everything from traditional sesame buns to fancy brioche buns. You can also skip the bun, too.
  • Toppings: Be sure to have your favorite on hand! We love ketchup or bbq sauce, mustard or pickled red onions on top.

Bun-free option: Serve your hot dog in a lettuce wrap, on a bed of greens, or cut up and used in other recipes, like franks and beans.

  1. Preheat your air fryer. Meanwhile, cut slits in the hot dogs in the shape of a V or an X. This will help steam escape while cooking and prevent them from curling. Once preheated, place hot dogs onto air fryer tray or in the air fryer basket.
  1. Cook your hot dogs in the air fryer for 6 minutes. If you would like to toast the buns, you can add them and cook for an additional minute.
  2. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Tips for Success

This air fryer recipe couldn’t be easier. Make sure to follow these tips for the best result!

  • Serve on a toasted bun. While this step is optional, a toasted bun holds condiments better than an untoasted bun and it adds an extra element of texture to the dish!
  • Keep an eye on the air fryer. Different air fryers can cook at different rates depending on their size, power, and other factors. For the best hot dogs, take a quick peek around the 5-minute mark to see if the hot dogs are finished.
  • Check your heat settings. If your air fryer doesn’t have a setting for 380°F, you can air fry hot dogs at 400°F and cook them for a minute or two less.

FAQ

My hot dogs aren’t crispy on the outside. How do I fix this?

Make sure you are cooking your hot dogs in a single layer so that they have room for the hot air to circulate. Otherwise, they may steam a bit more than air frying.

How do I store leftover hot dogs?

Store any leftover hot dogs in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

My hot dog isn’t done. What do I do?

Place the hot dog back in the air fryer and cook until fully warmed through. An instant-read thermometer placed in the center of the hot dog should register 165°F.

How to Serve

We love serving these hot dogs with traditional condiments like ketchup, mustard, or relish. For something unique and delicious, try these other serving suggestions.

Top your hot dogs with a slice of cheese and some homemade chili for mouthwatering chili dogs!
