They’re made with homemade, sugar-free, 100% Whole30 compliant teriyaki sauce, grilled fresh pineapples, sugar-free bacon and red onions, all wrapped up in butter lettuce, so these Aloha burgers just scream summertime to me!
It’s probably that killer combination of sweet and savory, with the juicy grilled pineapple and the crispy bacon perfectly complimenting the savory burger patty. If I’m being completely honest, my mouth is watering a little as I write this. Great burgers have that effect on me, though.
We love burgers (duh), but mainly we just love grilling.
Summer is a great excuse to get outside, play some music, hang out with friends, and grill up your favorite recipes. The nice thing about grilling is there are TONS of ways to make your favorite recipes Whole30 compliant, without making too many changes.
To make burgers Paleo and Whole30 friendly, just swap a lettuce wrap and use compliant condiments. And everybody will love that, even your non-Paleo friends.
I made a homemade teriyaki sauce, and it gives so much savory depth to the dish. But guess what? You don’t even have to make it yourself! There’s a Whole30 compliant teriyaki sauce available now — what a time to be alive!
If you don’t have a grill handy, no problem!
You can cook the burgers on the stovetop and then either grill or broil the pineapple slices. Cooked pineapple is one of the very best things in the world. The sugars caramelize and become unbelievably sweet and the juiciness is amplified by about a thousand. Trust me on this one, roast, grill, or broil your fruit whenever possible.

Aloha Hawaiian Burgers
Ingredients
Aloha Burgers
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 2 Tbsp. teriyaki sauce see below
- 1 pineapple
- 1 head bibb lettuce
- 8 pieces bacon
- 1/2 red onion
- salt and pepper
Whole30 Teriyaki Sauce
- 1/4 cup coconut aminos
- 2 Tbsp rice vinegar sub apple cider vinegar if you don’t have it
- 2 dates
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 inch ginger peeled
- dash hot sauce optional
Instructions
Make the Teriyaki Sauce
- Mince the garlic, dates, and ginger. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
- Allow to cook together for about 8-10 minutes, or until reduced enough that the mixture coats the back of a spoon.
- Strain it through cheesecloth (not 100% necessary, it’s only for texture), cover, and store in the refrigerator.
Make the Aloha Burgers
- Mix the beef with the teriyaki sauce and form into 4 patties (this can be done in advance, just cover and refrigerate until you’re getting ready to start cooking).
- Preheat your grill to medium, then cook the patties for about 4 minutes per side for medium.
Prep the Toppings
- Peel, core and slice the pineapples into 1/4 – 1/2 inch slices. Lay them directly on a well oiled and hot grill for about 3 minutes per side, but turn them often to prevent too much charring.
- Cook the bacon, wash the lettuce, slice the red onion.
Assemble the Burgers
- Fill each lettuce wrap with grilled pineapple and a burger patty, then pile it high with bacon, red onion, extra teriyaki. Enjoy!
