I love making side dishes in my air fryer! Why? Well, the air fryer cooks food quickly with only a little oil, it leaves me with fewer dishes to wash, and it keeps the rest of the kitchen available for cooking other stuff (and there’s always more stuff cooking!).

I love air frying so much, I even made a printable air fryer cooking chart to reference while you cook. And so today, in addition to sharing my recipes for air fryer tortilla chips, eggs, and zucchini, I’m now cooking green beans in the air fryer!

Green beans, also known as string beans, are a healthy, crowd-pleasing side dish. And these green beans are crisp, tender, and roasted to perfection in the air fryer. Make up a batch today!

Ingredients

The recipe ingredients laid out on a marble board and labeled: Green beans, olive oil, and salt & pepper.

Grab your air fryer, a pair of long, plastic tipped tongs (so you don’t burn your wrist or scratch the basket!), and you’re almost ready to get cooking! You only need a handful of ingredients to make air fryer green beans:

  • Green beans
  • Olive or avocado oil
  • Salt and pepper

Now if you’re looking for extra fun and flavor, we suggest try some of our (totally optional!) flavor combinations:

  • Bacon-Ranch Green Beans: Season with 1 Tablespoon ranch seasoning before cooking. Sprinkle the cooked green beans with 1/4 cup crumbled bacon.
  • Garlic Green Beans: Season with 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder before cooking. Sprinkle the cooked green beans with 1/4 cup sliced almonds.
  • Spicy Green Beans: Season with 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes before cooking. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice after cooking.

Cooking the Dish

Step 1: Start by pre-heating the air fryer. There isn’t much actual work to do, but you can save time by preparing the beans while the air fryer heats up.

Use a knife to cut off the stems the green beans, or snap them off with your hands. Optionally, you can cut the beans into bite sized pieces.

Step 2: Place the beans in a bowl, and toss with oil, salt, and pepper.

Step 3: Transfer them to a preheated air fryer and cook, stopping halfway to shake the basket or turn the beans with tongs.

👉 Important: You don’t want to overcrowd your air fryer. Aim to fill the basket no more than about 1/3 – 1/4 of the way. This will allow the air to properly circulate, and cook the beans evenly. If you have a lot of beans to cook, air fry them in batches!

You want to get the beans crispy and roasted, but still have some life in them. You’ll know they’re ready when they’re starting to crisp up but still bright green in color.

Using Frozen Green Beans

You might be wondering, can you air fry frozen green beans? The answer is yes, definitely!

👉 To cook frozen green beans in the air fryer, do not defrost the beans first. Cook them straight from frozen! Gently break apart any pieces that are stuck together, and follow the same method, but add 2-3 minutes to the cooking time.
