You would not believe how easy this homemade Maple Walnut Granola is to make! It’s absolutely delicious and a great, gluten-free breakfast or sweet treat to enjoy. The best part? My kids love it!!
Homemade Granola is way better than store-bought
You know I love me some granola, and I just love finding new ways to enjoy my favorite things. When you make it homemade, it’s totally different from the store-bought stuff! When it’s fresh, the texture and flavor is just… so much better. Plus you can totally customize it with whatever flavors you enjoy most! I used
But I want my food to be healthy, too. Unfortunately, I have a hard time remembering to write down my own recipes, so I’m always ending up with variations of my own cooking. Typical.
I experimented with cutting oil out of granola recipes all together, and when I substituted all the oil for applesauce and peanut butter (which naturally has oil), it came out pretty good… but it just didn’t get that same crunch that makes granola great. You need the crunch. We all need the crunch. So I kept on experimenting!
And homemade granola is healthier granola!
So, here’s what I decided to make: A homemade maple walnut granola recipe that doesn’t completely remove the oil, but instead, is substituted with applesauce, peanut butter, and only a little bit of coconut oil. Absolutely delish!
Tips for cooking homemade granola:
Taste the oats just before you’re done baking them! You may find you like yours a little sweeter, so you can add in a bit of brown sugar, honey, or agave, or you may find you like more of the cinnamon or peanut butter flavor! It’s all up to you. 🙂

In case you haven’t tried this already, it’s super simple:
- Just mix 3 Tbsp of chia seeds with 1/3 cup water, milk, or juice, stir, and soak for overnight in the fridge.
It turns into the miracle chia pudding recipe has tons of uses, and you can add any flavors you enjoy most! I like to soak them in almond milk and add a little bit of honey and cinnamon. Here I used almond-coconut milk to make the pudding, then topped it with a cherry & spinach puree (gotta get those greens in) and my homemade maple walnut granola. A hearty and healthy breakfast or snack!

Maple Walnut Granola
- 4 cups gluten free rolled oats
- 1/3 c unsweetened apple sauce
- 1/3 c maple syrup
- 1/4 c peanut butter
- 2 T coconut oil
- 1 cup total walnuts, dried cranberries, and shredded coconuts (you can substitute or add any other dried fruits, seeds, and nuts – I love almonds, dates, and sunflower seeds!)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Preheat your oven to 325. Stir together the apple sauce, maple syrup, peanut butter and coconut oil and cinnamon in a medium bowl and microwave on high for 40 seconds or until warm. Pour the mixture over the oats and stir, then mix in the nuts and dried fruit.
- Spread the mixture onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes so it cooks evenly. Take it out of the oven and allow to cool completely before you store it in an airtight container or ziplock bag.
