I just had to make these bbq grilled chicken drumsticks next. They’re kind of a summer classic, because they’re a crowd pleaser at every backyard bbq. What’s not to love about juicy chicken covered in sticky sweet barbecue sauce.

I like to make them with my homemade bbq sauce (it’s Whole30 compatible!), but you can use a store-bought kind, or a Keto friendly bbq sauce, depending on your dietary restrictions.

Ingredients

  • Chicken drumsticks: You can use this recipe for chicken thighs, chicken quarters, and even chicken breast. The seasoning mix will work on any type of chicken, just keep in mind that you will need to adjust the cook time for different cuts of meat.
  • Olive oil: You can use avocado oil in place of olive oil if that is all that you have on hand.
  • BBQ sauce: Make your own homemade bbq sauce, or any store-bought Whole30 compatible BBQ Sauce. To keep this recipe Keto/Low Carb, choose a sugar free BBQ sauce.
  • BBQ spice blend: Smoked paprika, onion powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper (optional).

How to Make Grilled Chicken Drumsticks

Follow these simple steps to make tender chicken drumsticks on the grill with your own dry rub:

Prep the Chicken

Add the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper to a small dish and mix them together with a spoon. Depending on how spicy you like your food, you can also add a little cayenne pepper to the mix.

When you open a package of chicken, it’ll probably have excess liquid. Take a few paper towels or napkins and pat every piece of chicken until they’re dry on all sides.

Next, drizzle the chicken with the oil and the spice blend. Mix it up well until all sides of the chicken are evenly coated. I use my hands, and yes, it gets a little messy.

Alternatively, you can add the chicken, oil, and seasonings to a zip top bag and mix it well. This will coat the chicken without getting your hands dirty.

Cook the Chicken

Gas Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, about 400°F (204°C) Add the chicken drumsticks and cook for about five minutes per side, until the skin is browned and crispy on all sides. Lower the heat to about 300°F, and close the grill. Cook for about 25 minutes, turning once halfway through.

Cooking on a Charcoal Grill: Create two zones by preparing the charcoal on one side of the grill only. Start by cooking the chicken directly on top of the heat source, then once the chicken is browned on all sides, move the pieces away from the heat source to finish cooking.

Last, brush each piece of chicken with sauce. Check the internal temperature to ensure the chicken is cooked through, then transfer the chicken to a plate or platter and serve!

Other Cooking Methods

Weather not cooperating? Out of propane? Or would you just prefer to cook inside? I’ve got you covered with these easy method adaptations!

Air Fryer Adaptation: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil, then set the chicken drumsticks inside, with a little space between each one. Depending on the size of your basket, you may need to cook it in two or three batches. Cook for 18-22 minutes, turning once halfway through. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature has reached at least 165°F (~74°C), per USDA.

Oven Adaptation: Preheat your oven to 400°F (~204°C). Set the chicken on a parchment or foil lined baking sheet. Cook 40-45 minutes, turning halfway through. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature has reached 165°F (~74°C), per USDA.

What to Serve with Grilled Chicken Drumsticks

These drumsticks go great with my broccoli ranch slaw, purple cabbage slaw, an easy potato salad, pickled cabbage, or zucchini and onions. And don’t forget the pickles!

Roasted parsnip fries, panko baked cauliflower bites, or sweet potato fries would also be tasty sides for these BBQ chicken drumsticks.

Some classic mashed potatoes and air fryer frozen green beans would give this dish extra comfort food fun! Then add a comforting sweet treat like s’more cupcakes or pumpkin cheesecake bars. For summery fun, this blueberry tart is great.

How to Store Leftover Chicken Legs

Transfer leftovers to an airtight container or zip top plastic bag. Store in the fridge for 3-4 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, place in the oven until the skin crisps back up and the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature. You can also reheat these in the air fryer!

Tips for Success

These are the best grilled chicken legs! Follow these simple tips to have these turn out perfect:

  • Always cook chicken to 165°F (~74°C). Use a meat thermometer to test the internal temperature at the thickest part of the meat, without touching the thermometer to the bone.
  • Make sure you use a clean, well-oiled grill. You don’t want leftovers of old food effecting the flavor of these drumsticks.
  • Don’t press down the chicken with your grilling tools. It doesn’t make the meat cook any faster, and it will press out some of the moisture.
  • Don’t try to force the chicken to turn too early. Each piece should easily release from the grill once it’s ready to be turned.

FAQ

Can I prep the chicken in advance?

Absolutely! You can prep the chicken the night before, then keep it covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to cook.

Should you oil drumsticks before grilling?

Oil the drumsticks along with the grill. This will help prevent sticking and will also make the chicken skin crispy.

Using your directions and recipe. Spices were perfect with just a sprinkle of cayene. I made the best BBQ drumsticks ever. Used gas grill. Great budget meal as I got 12 legs for $2.11.

These are great on the grill or in the oven! Perfect for our family get together.
You might want to update your nutrition baggie for the protein though. A chicken leg generally has anywhere from 12-28g of protein.
        Thanks for the recipe!

I grilled this recipe and turned out amazing. Today is my birthday and the family wants me to do this recipe again. I’m gonna do the drumsticks again but, also going to add boneless chicken breasts. Do I need to do anything differently?

      1. Hi Aaron, The biggest change is that the cooking time will vary based on the cut of meat you use. You should be able to follow the general ingredients and instructions with a few adaptations, but be sure to use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature has reached 165°F, per USDA. Let me know how it turns out! 🙂 -Laura

    1. Hi Kathy, I don’t have a Blackstone griddle myself so I’m not sure how to adapt the recipe. If you’re able to figure out a way to do it, please let us know! 🙂 -Laura

  4. I always have a question. It says cook on all sides. The legs are kind of round. Do you treat it like a cube, 1/4 turn every 5 minutes or as only 2 sides?

    1. Hi Markus, great question! I treat it more like a cube as you said and do 1/4 turns. 🙂 -Laura
